The goal of this workshop is to provide PhD students, postdocs, and early career faculty in the engineering design community a specific forum to learn and discuss best practice for preparing an NSF CAREER proposal. A second goal of this workshop is to encourage interaction between junior and senior faculty and strengthen the community bonds by providing a forum to discuss career development and planning. Such a workshop is necessary because CAREER proposals are inherently different from general unsolicited proposals to a NSF program, and those preparing to submit a CAREER must consider:
- how their proposed efforts relate to their overall career vision,
- how such a proposal should be structured,
- how to make the right connections that support the proposal, and
- how to incorporate feedback from previous panels.
The workshop will focus on explaining best practices for writing the NSF CAREER, discussing success stories and planning strategies, and giving proposal writers a chance to hear the perspectives of NSF program directors.
NEW THIS YEAR: We encourage attendees to participate in a junior faculty – senior faculty interaction event where we have carved out a special time for them to have informal interactions over lunch. Our goal is to increase the interactions junior faculty have with senior faculty (especially from outside of their department) to build community since such connections are valuable on the journey towards tenure.
